It was a banner night for late-night political comedy: Jon Stewart returned as host of The Daily Show, while Stephen Colbert welcomed fellow Daily Show alumnus John Oliver as a guest on the Late Show.
Oliver was on hand to promote the upcoming season premiere of his HBO series, Last Week Tonight, which once again involved attempting to goad Disney into a lawsuit. Oliver was joined by Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie. As the character recently entered the public domain, “he can help with promoting any non-Disney show-related show,” Oliver explained.
When Colbert noted Disney’s reputation for being a notoriously litigious organization, Colbert responded, “I feel like I’ve been ignored, so they’ve left me with no choice but to take this up a f*cking notch. That is why I am so happy to have Steamboat Mickey here — with you.”
When Colbert asked if he was an accomplice by having Steamboat Mickey on, Oliver quipped, “Wouldn’t it be more fun to be in a courtroom together?”
Oliver previously featured Steamboat Mickey on a poster for Last Week Tonight, which premieres its 11th season on Sunday, February 18th.
Oliver also recently teamed up with Seth Meyers for a monthly residency at the Beacon Theater in New York City that runs through June. Tickets are available for purchase here.
