Jimmy Page is being sued again by Jake Holmes, the original songwriter for “Dazed and Confused.” Holmes’ motion, filed in California court yesterday, May 5, alleges copyright infringement and breach of contract for the song’s inclusion in archival collections and a miscredited placement in the recently released Becoming Led Zeppelin documentary. Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film, and Warner Chappell are named as co-defendants.

Page’s legal differences with Holmes date back to 2010, when the latter pursued damages for the former’s decades of claiming sole authorship of the song. Holmes wrote the song as a folk-rock singer-songwriter in 1967, and the Yardbirds first encountered it while he was opening for them on tour. The band quickly embraced the track as a highlight of their live setlists, then Page went on to retool their treatment for the iconic recording on Led Zeppelin’s self-titled 1969 debut album. Since a settlement was reached in 2011, that cut has been attributed to “Jimmy Page (inspired by Jake Holmes).

Page’s return to court is founded on the assertion that two early recordings of the song featured in Becoming Led Zeppelin were used without Holmes’ permission or payment and credited exclusively to the founding guitarist. The same claim was made for the song’s appearance on several Yardbirds retrospective collections, including Yardbirds ’68 and The Yardbirds: The Ultimate Live at the BBC, among others. Holmes is seeking at least $150,000 per instance of infringement.
