Following a rough 2024 that saw her have to cancel an entire tour, star in a largely reviled Netflix movie and go through a public, drawn-out divorce from her husband Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez scored a much needed win at Sundance Film Festival over the weekend, where her new film Kiss of the Spider Woman premiered.
Similar to Jennifer Lopez’s other new movie — the Anthony Robles biopic Unstoppable, which hit Prime Video in January — Kiss of the Spider Woman was produced by Artists Equity, which is the production company that was founded by her ex-husband Ben Affleck and his longtime pal Matt Damon.
Kiss of the Spider Woman which does not yet have a distributor and therefore no release date, is based on the 1976 novel of the same name, which was also adapted into a Broadway play that won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1993.
Following the premiere of the film, the Sundance crowd gave Lopez and the film — directed by Chicago and Dreamgirls filmmaker Bill Condon — a standing ovation, which is a moment that the 55-year-old pop star and actress said she’s been waiting for “her whole life.”
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life. The reason I even wanted to be in this business is because my mom would sit me in front of the TV and [‘West Side Story’] would come on once a year. I was mesmerized and was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ This is the first time I actually got to do it. This man made my dream come true,” Lopez said following the standing ovation at the film’s Sundance premiere on Sunday, January 26, according to Variety.
