Scream 7 is coming our way in 2026 and it has been quite a journey for this film already. Many fans were not at all happy when Spyglass Media Group fired the franchise’s new star Melissa Barrera for her social media posts supporting Palestine. Shortly afterward, Christopher Landon left the project, saying it was a “dream job that turned into a nightmare.” And, word also came that Jenna Ortega would not return to the franchise as Tara Carpenter. Now, Jenna Ortega is confirming why she will not be in Scream 7 and the answer is brutally honest.
During an interview with The Cut, Jenna Ortega spoke up about why she left the Scream franchise. Previously, it was thought that she left due to her shooting schedule, which made sense considering her starring role in Netflix’s Wednesday series. But Ortega finally revealed that she left Scream 7 because things were crumbling.
“It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling,” Ortega revealed. “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If Scream 7 wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me in my career at the time.”
The team she’s referring to is Radio Silence, the collective who directed the last two films. While writer Guy Busick is sticking around to pen this film, Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first Scream film, will sit in the director’s chair. And franchise final girl Neve Campbell is reprising her role as Sidney, which is the main reason some fans are willing to come back.
Jenna Ortega isn’t hurting for any roles, with Death of a Unicorn, Wednesday season two, and other projects on the horizon. But sadly we will probably never see the Carpenter sisters again in the Scream franchise.
