Jean Smart Comedy Returns in April

Jean Smart Comedy Returns in April

The Season 4 trailer for the Max series Hacks, debuting this April, makes a lot of promises about what to expect Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) to do this time around: Drive a race car. Pop some balloons. Get a lap dance. Sledgehammer a kitchen. Get pulled over by the cops. All in the name of comedy, the one god Deborah and her closest friend/collaborator/nemesis Ava (Hannah Einbinder) agree to worship together.

At the end of Season 3, Deborah had just managed to land a dream job — hosting her own late-night talk show. The only catch being that she tried to screw Ava out of the head writer job on the show — and Ava resorted to blackmail in order to hold onto the position. The fourth season looks poised to pick up on that drama right away, as the tension is high between both women as they bounce between Los Angeles and Vegas.

The Hacks supporting cast includes Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo alongside Dan Bucatinsky, Helen Hunt, Tony Goldwyn, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Adams, Christopher McDonald, Poppy Liu, and Paul W. Downs (who is also one of the co-creators, alongside Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky. Joining the cast for the new season are Julianne Nicholson and Michaela Watkins, amongst many others.

Hacks has been an awards powerhouse of late, winning Outstanding Comedy at the 2024 Emmy Awards, while Smart picked up her third consecutive award for Lead Actress in a Comedy. The show returns for Season 4 on April 10th with 10 episodes.
