Jason Momoa, who starred as Aquaman/Arthur Curry in Zack Sndyer’s DCEU, has been rehired by DC Studios as it embarks on its new cinematic universe, the DCU, helmed by Guardians of the Galaxy diretor James Gunn. Momoa will not be playing Aquaman, however, but rather, the villainous Superman character Lobo.
According to reports, Jason Momoa has signed on to play Lobo in the DCU and will make his debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is set to begin production in the coming weeks under director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella).
In addition to Momoa, House of the Dragon season one star Millie Alcock has been cast as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El, Matthias Schoenaerts will play villain Krem of the Yellow Hill, and Eve Ridley will portray Ruthye Mary Knolle.
Momoa himself seemed to confirm his casting through an Instagram post, as he shared a screenshot of past comments he made about the character.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,” he said in the interview. “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f– yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there,” Momoa posted on Instagram with the simple caption “They called.”
A few hours after Momoa’s post on Instagram, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn took to social media to seemingly confirm the news by posting a photo of Lobo.

“An antihero known for his violent and irreverent personality, who hails from the planet Czarnia, Lobo possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities and an invulnerability that makes him a formidable opponent. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the character often is depicted as a bounty hunter who enjoys chaos and destruction. He was first introduced in Omega Men #3 in June 1983.” [via Deadline]
Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to begin on January 13 , with the film scheduled to be released in movie theaters on June 26, 2026. The first trailer for Superman, the debut film in the DCU when it hits theaters next July, premiered earlier this month.
