Now that the DCEU is officially dead, so is Margot Robbie’s time playing Harley Quinn in the franchise.
Given that Robbie is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, though, DC fans are obviously hopeful to see her return to the DC universe one day, whether that be as Harley Quinn or another character entirely.
And according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, he’d undoubtedly be open to working with the Barbie star again, whether it be “as Harley or as someone else.”
“I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s.)”
The Todd that Gunn is referring to is Todd Phillips, the director of Joker: Folie a Deux, which will feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. Joker: Folie a Deux will be hitting theaters in October.
The Oscar-nominated Robbie made her debut as Harley Quinn in the much-maligned 2016 film Suicide Squad and would then go on to reprise the role in 2020’s Birds of Prey and 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
While the now-dead DCEU is largely viewed as a mismanaged disaster, Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was undeniably one of the bright spots of the franchise and something that movie fans would’ve happily kept watching.
Given that Robbie is easily one of the three biggest actresses in Hollywood, especially after the success of Barbie, it’s wise of Gunn to leave the door open for her return. But what character could a star of her caliber play if it isn’t Harley Quinn?
The DCU has already filled the role of Hawkgirl in the form of Isabela Merced. A Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film is in development, which could be an obvious fit for Robbie, although given how he cast Superman: Legacy, the safe bet is that Gunn casts a relative unknown as Kara Zor-El.
While Wonder Woman, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy are likely off the table, Robbie could absolutely play the Kate Kane version of Batwoman if such a role were ever to come to fruition. The DCU should probably just focus on getting Superman: Legacy off the ground without an issues, though.
