Iconic west coast fast food chain In-N-Out burger rose to fame for several reasons, but two of those reasons stand out. For one, the chain attracted a cult following thanks to its secret menu with a seemingly endless list of items and hacks. Secondly, the burger chain has remained remarkably affordable, even as prices sky rocket among competitors.

But In-N-Out recently put a stop to a hack that customers were using to create their own version of the “Flying Dutchman,” a secret menu item which consists of two beef patties and two slices of cheese, with no bun (although fans often order it onion wrapped). However, customers learned that if they simply ordered the Flying Dutchmen piece by piece, they could save a significant chunk of change.

Currently, a Flying Dutchman will run you $5.50 in California. But Salvador Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that if you just order two burger patties and two slices of cheese, you can get the same product for nearly half the price without ordering the secret item by name.

“The new price of a meat and cheese patty will be aligned with Flying Dutchman pricing — a meat and cheese patty will be half the price of a Flying Dutchman,” In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick stated in a memo released on March 20.

The Times conducted a test at several locations in order to confirm the memo, which In-N-Out itself would not address publicly. Each test showed that the “hack” order came out to the same price as the Flying Dutchman.

In yet another unconfirmed memo, Warnick stated that workers should “Please be sensitive to any disappointment on behalf of our Customers. They are our Number One, and this change may take them by surprise.”
