Customizing a car used to require an in-depth knowledge of the vehicle and its many inner workings.
Now, however, thanks to both internet tutorials and advancements in software, making changes to one’s vehicle is easier than ever.
While some of these modifications can be pretty dramatic—for example, some people have installed ripcords in their Teslas to reduce the chance that they’ll be stuck inside of them—other upgrades are simply fun.
One user on TikTok has put in one of those “fun” upgrades—and now, he’s here to show you how it’s done.
How Did This Guy Hack His Apple CarPlay Sound?
In a video with over 3.1 million views, TikTok user Cameron (@cronloya) shows himself sitting in the front seat of his car.
“Today I learned that I could have my phone automatically play a sound when I plug it into Apple CarPlay,” he writes in the text overlaying the video.
As the video continues, he shows himself plugging his iPhone into his car’s infotainment system via a USB cable. After a second, an audio clip from the famous “Welcome to Chili’s” Vine plays—which causes Cameron to burst out laughing.
“I will abuse this power,” Cameron writes in the video’s caption.
How To Create A Startup Sound For Your Apple CarPlay
In a follow-up video, Cameron explains how one can set up the same automation in their vehicle.
First, one should find the sound that they want to use. Cameron suggests simply searching the internet for the sound, noting that he’s found that sites like Voicemod have a good selection of short audio clips.
After one has found the clip, they should save it in the “Files” of their iPhone.
From there, one should open the “Shortcuts” app, go to the “Automation” tab, and tap “New Automation.” Scroll down, and select “CarPlay.” Then make sure that “Connects” is selected, and choose “Run Immediately.”
In the next screen, tap “New Blank Automation,” and then scroll down to “Files.” Then select the word “File,” and find your sound. Search “Actions,” and then choose “Play Sound.” Hit “Done,” and your car should play your selected sound every time it connects with AirPlay. This works with both wired and wireless AirPlay connections.
Commenters Love It
In the comments section, users were excited by the idea of being able to add whatever sound they wanted to their CarPlay’s startup sequence.
Some simply shared their desired sounds.
“Wait…i want it to be that one sound ‘okayyy let’s go,’” wrote one user.
“The way I would do nothing beats a jet2 holiday,” added another.
“I did that to both of my exs phones. And now he can’t figure how to get it to stop. It’s been two years,” revealed a third.
Others simply complained about CarPlay itself.
“Meanwhile, I can’t even get my d— CarPlay to stay connected,” said a commenter.
