Dragons have officially returned to their aerial dance floor. HBO has announced it has begun production on House of the Dragon season three. The network celebrated the start of shooting by also revealing two new cast members. Tommy Flanagan and Dan Fogler will join House of the Dragon season three as two Northern Lords with important roles to play in the deadly Targaryen civil war.

In a press release, HBO said “production has commenced” on House of the Dragon season three. Production is taking place in the United Kingdom, where all eight episodes of the third season of House of the Dragon will film.

A March 31 production start is actually a little earlier than House of the Dragon season two kicked off. It began filming on April 11, 2023. Despite season three beginning on April Ludgate’s favorite day, the show will almost certainly return on the same schedule season two followed. It didn’t debut on HBO until June of 2024. We won’t have to wait that long to actually revisit Westeros, though. The second Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will also debut later this year.

Whenever House of the Dragon season three does premiere, we know two great actors who will be a part of it. HBO announced Tommy Flanagan (Gladiator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury, A Complete Unknown) have joined the cast. Flanagan will play Ser Roderick Dustin. Fogler will star as Ser Torrhen Manderly. We can’t explain why without spoilers, but both are perfect choices, particularly Flanagan. Ser Roderick Dustin is one of the most memorable figures from the Dance of the Dragons.

Flanagan and Fogler join fellow newcomer James Norton on House of the Dragon season three. He’ll play Ormund Hightower on the other side of the war. Season three will mark the return of many stars. That includes: Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

With how many totally-not-controversial-in-any-way changes the show has made, we can’t actually be sure who will live or who will die during House of the Dragon‘s third season. But at least we know some of those deaths are already in production.
