Hong Kong’s tourism board says it approached IShowSpeed thanks to his super-viral visit to China as his international broadcasts continue to rack up millions of views – and they want to work with other streamers, too.
IShowSpeed is one of the net’s top streamers, thanks in no small part to his travels abroad.
First starting in 2024, Speed drew massive crowds of fans during his famous trip through Europe — something he’s doing once again in China as his broadcasts gain the attention of the country’s government due to his sheer popularity.
Speed first kicked off his China stream on March 24, and as of April 8, he’s become somewhat of a sensation in the nation, with hordes of viewers following him around in public.
IShowSpeed is in the midst of his tour through China – and his streams are so popular that they’re attracting the attention of the Chinese government.
In fact, Speed is such a streaming powerhouse that Hong Kong actually wanted to work with the American influencer, as told by the region’s Chief Executive, John Lee.
Hong Kong praises IShowSpeed in hopes of working with streamers
As reported by the Hong Kong Free Press, Hong Kong’s tourism board approached Speed in the hopes of collaborating with him — and although the broadcaster didn’t respond, they’ve made it clear that they are still hopeful to partner with him for future projects.
“The tourism board actually approached Speed on various arrangements and indicated their willingness to provide assistance, but Speed did not approach the tourism board, so the government did not take any action,” Lee said on Tuesday, April 8.
“But I must stress that the government will seize every opportunity for Speed or any other influencers if they come to Hong Kong. I’m sure everyone would like to see Hong Kong being promoted… We want everyone to see the merits of Hong Kong.”
This isn’t the first time China’s government has mentioned Speed. In fact, state-sponsored media outlets were lauding the streamer for promoting positive relations between China and the United States despite rising political tensions between the two nations.
Speed’s efforts have also been addressed by other world governments, including Peru, where he was declared an ambassador for the country in front of a throng of 20K fans.
There’s very few streamers doing it quite like Speed, and he’s far from finished traveling the world, saying he wants to be one of the first content creators to broadcast from outer space.
