People are threatening to sue for damages after Home Depot installed these objects near the parking lot. When you pull into the parking lot of a store, there are often speed bumps adjacent to the store. These bumps are typically placed at key crossing points—like entrances, exits, and cart returns. They’re there to slow cars down where people are likely to be walking.
Speed bumps are designed to slow down the driver by 5 to 20 mph, depending on how high and wide they are, according to the Traffic Safety Warehouse. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react to pedestrians, especially children or those with limited mobility.
But what happens when a speed bump can do more harm than good?
Did Home Depot Make A Mistake?
In a trending video, content creator Crissy (@crissysglowupboutique) shared the surprising and potentially dangerous thing she saw by the parking lot of her local Home Depot. Her video has more than 230,000 views.
“When your local Home Depot installs parking curbs for speed bumps,” the text overlay on the video read.
In the images, you can clearly see that the two black chunks placed in the driveway are poor excuses for speed bumps.
How Do You Know They’re Not Speed Bumps?
Well, speed bumps usually have a gradual slope to prevent damage to vehicles while still encouraging drivers to slow down. These “speed bumps” have a sharp incline that commenters pointed out could damage their car.
They’re also often made of rubber or built into the road with asphalt. These “speed bumps” could be made of asphalt. But they’re in no way integrated into the road and instead jut out.
And if you look up images of a speed bump and a parking curb (you know, the thing that indicates a space is meant for parking), you’ll see that what the Home Depot installed looks like the latter.
How Did This Happen?
It’s unclear how Home Depot made this mistake and went as far as to install the parking curbs, but what we find most surprising about the situation is that Home Depot literally sells speed bumps.
When you look up “speed bump” on the website, 1,879 results pop up.
All they had to do was order one from their own website, and things would have been fine.
Instead, drivers are now having to worry about scraping the underside of their cars or even cracking a bumper if they don’t slow to a near stop—or worse, miss seeing the curbs entirely.
Commenters React
Commenters under the video were quick to voice their frustration.
“Park your truck there and walk into the store,” a top comment read.
“Those would destroy my car bumper, and I’d probably get stuck on top of it,” a person said.
“Lmaooo how are they not getting sued,” another asked.
“As a lowered car driver, a slightly high speed bump will rip off my exhaust this would destroy my engine, trans pan, and exhaust,” a commenter shared.
