Adrien Brody’s performance in The Brutalist as Lazslo Toth–an architect and Holocaust survivor–has earned him his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His first nod came more than 20 years ago in 2003, when he won the award for his leading role in The Pianist. That win earned him the title of youngest-ever actor to win Best Actor, at age 29.
Adrien Brody’s awards
This year, Brody is up against Timothée Chalamet, who is nominated for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. If Chalamet wins, he’d surpass Brody by just a few months as the youngest to win the award.
In addition to his Oscar and SAG nominations for his role in The Brutalist, Brody was also nominated and has now won a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, the Palm Springs and Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards.
The famous kiss
When Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2003, him becoming the youngest to ever win the award was not the only thing that made history. Upon collecting his statuette, Brody passionately kissed the presenter of the award, actress Halle Berry, who revealed that this action took her by surprise.
After hugging his mother, Brody approached the stage and ran to the podium — where he hugged Berry and kissed her on the lips for several seconds, while dipping her and supporting her head. “I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag,” he said to the X-Men actress as he began his speech.
Adrien talked about the kiss while reflecting on his Oscar win during a 2015 interview with VaVanity Fair, saying: “That sure was probably one of the most memorable moments ever. You could say time slowed down. That was that moment where I really, really felt it slow down. In fact, it must have, because by the time I got finished kissing her, and people kinda settled in, they were already flashing the sign that said, ‘Get off the stage, your time is up.'”
His relationship with Elsa Pataky
Adrien Brody’s relationship with Elsa Pataky was highly publicized and beloved by fans. Brody and Pataky first began dating in 2006. According to various reports, for Pataky’s 31st birthday in July 2007, Brody bought her a 19th century farmhouse in New York that was remodeled to look like a castle, which garnered an exclusive 35-page article for Hello!
The couple dated for three years before they separated in 2009. Pataky is now married to Chris Hemsworth, with whom she shares three kids.
In February 2020, Brody reportedly got into a relationship with fashion designer and actress Georgina Chapman, whom he allegedly began dating while she was still married to another famous figure. Five years later, Chapman and Brody are still together.
