Hiker triggers rescue after singing Nickelback in the woods

A hiker in British Columbia unintentionally prompted a search-and-rescue mission after hikers misheard his loud solo Nickelback a cappella concert as cries for help.

The incident unfolded near Kelowna’s Boulderfields in Canada on July 31, 2025, when two hikers called emergency services after hearing what sounded like repeated shouts coming from the forest. According to the organization’s Facebook page, Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR), which was carrying out a routine “training night,” immediately dispatched searchers, RCMP officers, and a drone unit into the area.

Upon locating the individual, they discovered he was safe and simply “singing his heart out to the trees,” unaware his singing had carried so far and been interpreted as a distress signal due to the acoustics of the area.

Search manager Duane Tresnich confirmed the callout was a false alarm and that the man was unharmed. COSAR praised the hikers for reporting the sound and reminded the public that their services are always free, even suggesting the money saved could “be spent on singling lessons.”

Sadly, it’s not known which Nickelback track the unnamed hiker was serenading the countryside with, but it would be apt, considering the heroic, but ultimately unneeded efforts of COSAR, if they had been literally and figuratively singing for a Hero to come save them.

Formed in 1995, Nickelback is a Canadian rock group led by frontman Chad Kroeger. The band is currently touring North America.
