Ellie Anderson used her track and field training to secure a front-row spot at Lollapalooza for Sabrina Carpenter. She casually set a Personal Record while running to the barrier.
The recent high school graduate ran a stupid fast mile.
All of those years of training in track and field paid off in an unexpected way. Nobody had a better view for the Sunday headliner than she!
Lollapalooza barrier runs are no joke!
Lollapalooza takes place at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. Gates open at 11:00 a.m.
Although overnight camping is no longer allowed, festivalgoers arrive to the entrance as early as 5:00 a.m. to be the first people inside. The earlier they get to the gates, the faster they can get through security. The faster they can get through security, the faster they can run to their spots.
Barrier runs get intense. Fans of a specific artist, in this case Sabrina Carpenter, sprint at full speed to get as close to the stage as possible. It gets intense!
Those who do choose to run to the front row of the main stage must then stay in their spot throughout the entire day to be there for the headliner. Here is a POV look at how it all goes down:
The run itself covers approximately one full mile— just a little bit less than a full 5,280 feet.
It is not for the feint of heart. You must really want it.
High school track stars have a leg up.
Most of the festivalgoers have little to no experience with a run of this distance, let alone at this pace. That gave Ellie Anderson a big advantage.
The soon-to-be freshman at Georgetown University ran track for Pinon Track Club Elite and the Latin Schoo of Chicago. I am not sure if she is going to run for the Hoyas but she qualified for nationals as a senior in high school!
All of this goes to say that Ellie Anderson can really scoot.
She is even faster when Sabrina Carpenter is involved. Her 5:08 pace at Lollapalooza was a personal best.
Anderson ran so fast to get to the front row of the main stage that the Life360 app thought she was driving. It was not a car!
To put that pace into perspective, Nikki Hilitz won the 1,500-meter race at the USATF Outdoor Championships with a time of 4:03.15. Ellie Anderson was just one minute slower, as a 12th grader, at a music festival.
A 5:08 mile pace is considered a strong pace for elite male runners in their 20s and 30s on a track. This was to see Sabrina Carpenter at Grant Park in Chicago. I am impressed.
