Here’s Why Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy Did NOT Appear in ANDOR Season 2_1

Andy Serkis made a HUGE impact on Andor fans in season one, playing Kino Loy, a Narkina 5 prisoner who helped lead a prison rebellion against the Empire. Serkis’ Kino Loy made a hugely moving speech in Andor season one and then broke hearts when it turned out he couldn’t join the prison escape that he himself helped orchestrate because he couldn’t swim. Loy’s character beautifully illuminated Andor‘s themes of rebellion, love, and sacrifice. And so, fans hoped Andy Serkis would return as Kino Loy in Andor season two. But did he, and if so why not?

Alas, Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy did not return to Andor in season two. The last we see of the character is in season one, episode 10 of Andor, “One Way Out.” As mentioned, in this episode, Loy is unable to escape the prison with Cassian and the rest of those imprisoned.

Andor Creator Tony Gilroy Reveals Why Kino Loy Did Not Return

But since Kino Loy was so beloved, why didn’t he make it back to Andor? Well, creator Tony Gilroy has a pretty sensical response. He notes, “Andy dropped the mic, man. What am I going to do that’s going to be better than what we did? All it does is minimize that moment. I knew a lot of people were talking about whether we had a way of [bringing him back]. But I didn’t want to have that sort of coincidental environment.”

Ultimately, we don’t know the fate of Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy in Andor or Star Wars‘ world. But we do know that he got to leave our screens on a powerful note. And that’s more than some characters are lucky enough to receive. We agree with Gilroy that a meaningful conclusion is better than having a character appear just for the sake of appearance. And much as we loved Kino Loy on Andor, if there was nothing for him to do in season two, then it’s best he never made an appearance.

Andor Season 2 Left Other Character Fates Unknown

Kino Loy’s Andor ending isn’t the only question mark we are left with after the series’ finale. Cassian Andor’s sister also remains a mystery figure that did not quite receive an ending. Gilroy reveals, “[Kino Loy] is like the sister — people wanted to know if we’re going to resolve the sister,” Gilroy continued. “And the sister, in the beginning, is so much more interesting to me as a deficit. She’s much more valuable to me for Cassian as an absence. As he says in the end, ‘Maybe I should stop saving people.’ His need to return and save people and to be a savior and the compulsion to do that comes from this hole in his life, and I didn’t really didn’t want to fill that in.”

ANDOR Delivers an All-Time Episode By Exploring the Tragedy and Hope of True Sacrifice

It’s always possible in the Star Wars world that down the line, Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy or Cassian Andor’s mysterious sister will resurrect for another show or movie. But honestly, we hope not. Andor is perfect just as it is.
