The adult cast for the HBO Harry Potter series has been confirmed!
Specifically, they revealed the cast for 6 of the major roles including Snape, Dumbledore, McGonagall, and more.

DUMBLEDORE: John Lithgow
HBO confirmed the casting today, though it has been known for a while now!
John previously confirmed the news and explained why he said “yes” to the project.
“As the kids grew older [in the books], you learn more and more about Dumbledore, and he became a much more surprising, complicated character. They have described this to me, and I’ve got to discover it for myself and make it my own,” he added to Variety.
PROFESSOR SNAPE: Paapa Essiedu
I May Destroy You actor Paapa Essiedu has officially been cast as Snape.
His casting has been rumored since 2024, and now it’s official!
PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: Janet McTeer
HBO confirmed that Janet McTeer is set to portray Professor McGonagall in the series. The role was previously played by Maggie Smith in the films.
She is best known for her work in the Netflix series Ozark and her Oscar-nominated performances in the movies Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs.
HAGRID: Nick Frost
Shaun of the Dead actor Nick Frost is set to play Hagrid in the series.
PROFESSOR QUIRRELL: Luke Thallon
Stage star Luke Thallon has been confirmed to portray Professor Quirinus Quirrell, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who…spoiler alert – is controlled by Voldemort in the first book!
It is a recurring role in the series.
ARGUS FILCH: Paul Whitehouse
Harry & Paul‘s Paul Whitehouse has taken on the role of Argus Filch. He’ll be a recurring role in the series. If you don’t know, Filch is the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is revealed to be a “squib” – a born wizard who can’t perform magic.
