Whether you have long, flowing locks or a super-short coif, you probably have a blow dryer in your bathroom. And unless you splurged on the holy grail Dyson model, you’re probably like me, who just bought the cheapest, most straightforward model you can find. However, if that meant you clicked “order” on Shein or AliExpress, you may want to keep reading, as two hair dryers sold through these popular online retailers have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over “electrocution or shock hazard.”

CPSC

The first CPSC recall is for 310 Teckwe hair dryer brushes sold by Shein between July 2024 and October 2024.

“The handheld hair dryer brushes lack an immersion protection device, posing an electrocution or shock hazard to consumers if the hair dryer brushes fall into water when plugged in,” reads the recall notice. “The CPSC has determined that hair dryers not equipped with the integral immersion protection present a substantial product hazard.”

The hair dryers in question are gray and purple, and the brand name Teckwe is printed on the handle. They come with five interchangeable heads for straightening and styling, and cost between $9 and $21.

If you believe you have one of these hair dryers, the CPSC says to follow these instructions to stay safe and receive a full refund from Shein: “Consumers should destroy the recalled hair dryers by unplugging the hair dryer, cutting the cord and disposing of them in accordance with local and state recycling laws, and send an image of the destroyed hair dryer to Shein at [email protected].”

At the time of writing, no injuries were reported.

The second CPSC recall is for 980 multi-styler hair dryers sold by AliExpress between May 2023 and November 2024.

Similarly, the recall notice reads: “The handheld hair dryers lack an immersion protection device, posing an electrocution or shock hazard to consumers, if the hair dryers fall into water when plugged in. The CPSC has determined that hair dryers not equipped with the integral immersion protection present a substantial product hazard.”

Three different multipack hair dryer bundles, which sold for between $41 and $135, are included in the recall:

  • A light green/blue 6-in-1 multi-styler hair dryer with model number HS01 on its underside, measuring 16″ long x 7″ wide x 5″ high and weighing four pounds, powered by the V9 digital motor.
  • A light green/blue or gray 5-in-1 multi-styler hair dryer with model number HS01 on its underside, measuring 14″ long x 6″ wide x 4″ high and weighing four pounds, powered by the V9 digital motor.

If you believe you have one of these hair dryers, the CPSC says to follow these instructions to stay safe and receive a full refund from AliExpress: “Consumers should destroy the recalled hair dryers by unplugging the hair dryer, cutting the cord and then send an image of the destroyed hair dryer to AliExpress. AliExpress is directly contacting all purchasers. Consumers should email the photo of their destroyed hair dryer to AliExpress by replying to the email from AliExpress about the recall.”

At the time of writing, no injuries were reported.
