In 1965, the Grateful Dead were a group of fresh-faced beatniks unaware of their future notoriety. Still shakin’ the dust off their jug band era, they tested the waters in search of the limitless boundaries of their future musical exploration, which would catapult them for the next 30 years.

While the exact number of live shows is merely an estimate that hovers above 2,000, the band’s ability to conjure magic on stage resulted in their fan search for moments of inspiration [move me brightly] through concerts past. As the group reaches its 60th anniversary, Rhino Records will release Enjoying The Ride, a limited edition 60 CD boxed set featuring performances from 20 iconic venues, captured over 25 years, 1969-1994. The set is due out on May 30, 2025.

Excluding a couple of previously released tracks, Enjoying The Ride boasts a plethora of unheard recordings, numbering over 450 tracks that total over 60 hours of hip-swinging entertainment. Of the 20 aforementioned shows included in the collection, 17 are delivered in full–with some added material from the same venue. The remaining three: Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall, have been sorted from multiple nights to display pivotal points from those specific stages.

The 60th anniversary set features original recordings by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. These recordings were restored and mastered by David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman, who used Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality on select captures.

Enjoying The Ride will arrive in a special keepsake box inspired by the band’s travel itinerary and stops at iconic concert venues. In addition to music, Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) provides a roadmap of linear notes, along with producer notes from David Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation and more.

“Narrowing down the Grateful Dead’s touring career and live performances to 60 CDs, 20 venues, and more than 450 songs is hard enough. Narrowing THAT down for 3CD and 6LP sets is a monumental undertaking, but with so much great music to select from, it’s one of the most enjoyable compilations we’ve ever assembled. This nearly four-hour collection contains one song (or two, or three…) from every show in the Dead’s new road tripping boxed set, ENJOYING THE RIDE, which brings together music from 20 (21…) of the most essential venues in Grateful Dead and Dead Head history,” Lemieux offered via press release.

As the initial preview of the forthcoming package, three previously unreleased singles have been shared: “Scarlet Begonias,” “Touch of Grey,” and “Fire on The Mountain. ” All three are derived from the Grateful Dead’s July 13, 1984 concert at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif. Listen below.
