Grand Theft Hamlet Trailer Blends Video Game with Shakespeare

We got a movie made in Grand Theft Auto before GTA 6. Titled Grand Theft Hamlet, the upcoming documentary goes behind the scenes of Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen’s efforts to stage a Shakespeare production within the world of Grand Theft Auto Online. Watch the new trailer below.

As the story goes, the then-out-of-work actors came up with the idea after they got sucked into GTA Online during one of the UK’s several pandemic lockdowns. As shown in the trailer, however, recruiting folks to audition in the middle of gameplay proved to be a difficult task.

“We are putting on a production of Hamlet in GTA Online for the first time ever. We are looking for actors, so come and audition,” one of them says in the clip, only to be gunned down.

The pair’s efforts continue throughout the trailer as they beg other players to hear them out. One of them laments that “no one’s going to come” to audition because “it’s not a real thing,” but the other insists, “It’s real to me.”

Just when all hope appears to be lost, they come across folks who are willing to help. This included Crane’s partner, Pinny Grylls, who ended up co-directing the documentary with him.

Distributed through MUBI, Grand Theft Hamlet has won multiple awards on the film festival circuit and currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 36 reviews. It opens in US theaters on January 17th.
