Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have made tons of headlines during this on-again off-again two-decade-long relationship, but arguably none have been more infamous than their 2003 bomb Gigli. During. a recent interview, Affleck recalled the famed misfire, saying it’s maybe the “most famous bomb” in the history of Hollywood.
Affleck, who will next be seen starring in a sequel to The Accountant next Spring, recently sat down for an interview alongside his buddy and long-time creative collaborator Matt Damon to discuss the pair’s production company, Artists Equity.
Artists Equity was founded in November 2022 and has just a handful of films under its belt, one of which is Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming movie Unstoppable, which is about former NCAA champion one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, will begin a limited theatrical release on December 6 and will begin streaming on Prime Video on January 16.
Speaking to Deadline about their burgeoning production company, Ben Affleck recalled the disaster that was Gigli, saying that it “doesn’t sit right with him.”
“I got a big cash payday for that. Well, it doesn’t feel right in retrospect because they lost money. It wasn’t the biggest money-losing movie in history even though it was the most famous bomb in history, perhaps,” Affleck said in an interview with Deadline.
“Nonetheless, that doesn’t sit right with me. But it also doesn’t sit right with people when they go, wait a minute, we all sacrificed to be committed to this. And then the old story about the $10 million movie that’s made $200 million and nobody’s seen a nickel.”
In addition to producing Unstoppable — which also stars Jharrel Jerome, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, and Don Cheadle — Artists Equity is also producing The Accountant sequel and Lopez’s upcoming remake of Kiss of the Spider Woman.
