The death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, remains a mystery. Earlier this week, Hackman, his wife, and his dog were all found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
On Friday, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza held a press conference to reveal that they have yet to find a cause of death for the couple.
“The manner and cause of death have not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.”
Mendoza told reporters that the couple showed “no external trauma” to either person and that initial tests showed that they both tested negative for carbon monoxide.
“Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual. Both individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide.”
Mendoza revealed that Hackman’s pacemaker activity suggests he died over a week before his body found.
“An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr Hackman’s pacemaker. This revealed that his last event was recorded February 17 2025, I was advised that a more thorough investigation will be completed.”
