In case you missed it, the all-female Blue Origin crew made their 11-minute trip to space on Monday. Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Amanda Nguyen, Aisha Bowe, and Kerianne Flynn became the first all-female crew to go to space since Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova did so in 1963.
Of course, Tereshkova had to train for her space flight in an era where being strapped to a rocket was a little more harrowing. She also orbited the Earth 48 times and spent almost three days in space. So the celebrities’ space flight was a little bit different. Other than former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, none of the other women had any qualifications other than being acquaintances of Jeff Bezos, or in Lauren Sanchez’s case, being his girlfriend.
Many people weren’t exactly thrilled with the group’s trip to space. Olivia Munn threw massive shade at the mission last week, calling it “gluttonous.” Then after the flight, other female celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Emily Ratajkowski and Amy Schumer also called them out.
Olivia Wilde shaded the trip on her Instagram Story. “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess,” she wrote alongside a carousel of memes.
Amy Schumer also took to Instagram to mock the space flight, writing, “Guys, last second they added me to space, and I’m going to space. I’m bringing this thing. It has no meaning to me, but it was in my bag, and I was on the subway, and I got the text, and they were like, ‘Do you want to go to space?’ so I’m going to space. Thank you to everyone who got me here.”
Emily Ratajkowski was far more direct, saying she was “disgusted” by the whole thing.

Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez apparently heard about all the negativity being directed their way and tried to defend their trip to space.
King claimed to People magazine that “anybody that’s criticizing it doesn’t really understand what is happening here. We can all speak to the response we’re getting from young women from young girls about what this represents.”
“I get really fired up,” Sanchez told People. “I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don’t just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle. They love their work and they love the mission and it’s a big deal for them. So when we hear comments like that, I just say, ‘Trust me. Come with me. I’ll show you what this is about, and it’s, it’s really eye-opening.”
