Futurebirds and Carl Broemel Take Over Charleston (A Gallery)

Last week, Athens, Ga.-based indie rock outfit Futurebirds took over the city of Charleston, S.C., with the help of My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel. Their stint in the Holy City started on Wednesday, May 25 with a pop-up show at Home Team BBQ. They then moved to the Charleston’s Premier Beach Club Since 1972: The Windjammer on the Isle of Palms for two huge nights in the sand on Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27.

The shows on Thursday and Friday were opened by Broemel with the Futurebirds backing him for his performances on both evenings. Highlights from the opening sets include “Sleepy Lagoon,” “Last Dance With Mary Jane” and “Monteagle.”

The multi-instrumentalist continued to sit in with Futurebirds for their sets which were overflowing with their unmistakable country rock-infused sound, and reverb-soaked harmonies. On July 28, 2021, Broemel and Futurebirds released the four-track EP, Bloomin’, and with these recent collaborations, more music may be on the way soon.

Charles Warren and Everett Zuraw captured the action below.
