The first reactions and reviews to George Miller’s Furiosa, a prequel to his 2015 modern action classic Mad Max: Fury Road, have hit the internet after the embargo placed on journalists and critics who have seen the film lifted on Monday, May 6.
According to those who have seen the film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, while different from Fury Road, kicks major cinematic butt all the same.
“Brings me great joy to report that Furiosa is really, *really* f—— good. operates in an extremely different gear than Fury Road (in ways that i suspect will frustrate some people), but also manages to make that movie even richer while carving its own legend in the wasteland,” reviewed IndieWire’s film critic.
“George Miller’s Furiosa is powerhouse action filmmaking at its absolute best! A ferocious & relentlessly paced epic that expands the story of Furiosa and the Wasteland while delivering the craziest chases, the most bombastic characters & just plain stunning cinematography,” hailed a critic for Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes.
Almost a decade after the success of Fury Road, George Miller has grabbed all the Mad Max hype & expectations by the throat and squeezed: #Furiosa (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is fucking incredible. I needed a night’s sleep to process this because I wanted to unravel all the “Oh My God/Holy… pic.twitter.com/KvrFDj5VFA

While the action in the film is obviously standing out as a highlight, as we’ve come to expect from the Mad Max franchise, the performances of stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are also receiving particular praise.
“Furiosa is not Fury Road and that’s ok. It’s not trying to be. What it is is something uniquely gnarly and yes, epic. I can’t wait to see it again and again and really dig in. All hail George Miller. As for performances, Anya and Hemsworth are fantastic,” said MTV’s Josh Horowitz.
“Furiosa is myth making at its finest. The most sprawling Mad Max Saga entry returns to the series’ roots: it’s a powerful, moving, gritty tale of revenge in the middle of a world gone wild. Also: windsurfing bombers. Anya Taylor-Joy owns, Hemsworth kills!” said a writer from SlashFilm.
Starring alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role of Furiosa, originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa also stars Chris Hemsworth as the movie’s villain, Warlord Dementus.
Alyla Browne and Tom Burke also have roles in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which will be released in movie theaters in the United States on Friday, May 24.
