It’s only been 13 years since the high school football drama Friday Night Lights went off the air, but apparently, it’s time for a reboot. As detailed by Matt Belloni at Puck News, a revival of the series is in the works at Universal TV with the original creatives on board.
According to the report, director Pete Berg, showrunner Jason Katims, and producer Brian Grazer are all attached to return. The drama will still be set “in the world of Texas high school football,” but with new characters.
Based on H.G. Bissinger’s book and the 2004 film, the original Friday Night Lights aired on NBC and the 101 Network for five seasons. Taking place in the fictional West Texas town of Dillon, the show’s ensemble cast was led by Kyle Chandler as head football coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife Tami Taylor.
The series also starred Michael B. Jordan, Jesse Plemons, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford, Adrianne Palicki, Minka Kelly, and more. Pick up the original Friday Night Lights on Blu-ray or stream it on Netflix.
According to Belloni, the Friday Night Lights reboot is part of a focus on “MAGA-friendlier projects” in Hollywood, which “probably isn’t great news” for Aaron Sorkin’s planned movie about the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol Building.
