A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar early Friday morning and the quake, which is said to have occurred at a ‘shallow’ depth of just 6 miles below the surface which resulted in a great deal of surface shaking. 600 miles away in Bangkok, building were toppled and many have lost their lives.
As of mid-day EST, there were already 144 confirmed deaths in Myanmar and 730 injured according to NPR, and that number continues to climb.
In Bangkok ~600 miles away, an entire skyscraper under construction collapsed from the shaking caused by the shallow earthquake. Footage of the building coming down have gone viral across various social networks with people worldwide aghast at the images. According to ABC News, at least 8 individuals lost their lives when the building collapsed.
In Myanmar where the earthquake struck, high-rise buildings were swaying with pools overflowing from high above. It looked like a literal waterfall coming off the top of the skyscraper:

While it is easy to get caught up in watching/sharing videos like these across social media it is important to remember the scope of this tragedy. Hundreds of people have lost their lives. That number will continue to rise. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by the Myanmar earthquake.
