A hiker in Central Florida came upon an unusual sight on the trail. They were out on the Juniper Prairie Wilderness east of Ocala when they spotted an enormous Florida alligator lumbering along like it owned the place.
The saying goes that anywhere in Florida that you can find freshwater then chances are there is an alligator in it but the same cannot be said for hiking trails… That’s precisely why this is such a unique clip.
I’m a born and raised Floridian myself and it is quite rare for me to see an alligator fully on land. If I see them out of water, typically they are on the bank of a pond or lake and they’re still partially submerged. Or if they are fully exposed it is still common to see them ‘sunning’ on the edge of a lake that they can quickly retreat to. Seeing them walking like this in all their glory is not common:
Oh to be a Florida alligator walking along the Juniper Prairie Wilderness trails, completely unbothered by the outside world, in search of your next pond where you can score an easy meal. That’s the life.
This area, Juniper Prairie Wilderness, is near Silver Glen Springs which is one of Florida’s hidden gems. And I mean that in the sense that people visiting Florida rarely if ever take the time to visit while most native Floridians know how spectacular that freshwater spring is and how incredible Florida’s freshwater springs are in general.
That said, anywhere there’s crystal clear water in Florida then there is likely to be an abundance of fish. If there’s fish then there are predators in the area looking to eat those fish. So it comes as no surprise that there would be massive alligators in this part of Florida (they’re everywhere).
I don’t know why, but that clip above which has gone viral on TikTok reminded me of this video from several years back of an absolute BEHEMOTH of an alligator walking through a forest. This is an absolute unit:
