After a five-month delay, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will finally be handed out on Monday.
The broadcast was originally slated for last September, but the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes resulted in many actors, writers, and TV producers threatening to boycott the broadcast.
To avoid the potential backlash, the TV Academy rescheduled the Emmys for the new year.
Actor Anthony Anderson, himself an 11-time Emmy nominee, will host the event, which will air on Fox.
The We Are Family host joked about the gig, saying, “With our industry’s recent challenges behind us, we can get back to what we love – dressing up and honoring ourselves.
“And there’s no better celebratory moment to bring the creative community together than the milestone 75th Emmy Awards.
“When Fox asked me to host this historic telecast, I was over the moon that Taylor Swift was unavailable.
“Now, I can’t wait to be part of the biggest night in television.”
Plenty of people will be tuning in to see TV salute itself. And many more will be watching for all the inevitable awkward moments and blunders.
Like these.
LOSING HER COOL
The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge seemed genuinely shocked when she won her first-ever Emmy as outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series.
Jennifer, 62, took the stage toward the end of the 2022 Emmys to accept her award.
She began thanking those who contributed to her success and those closest to her, saying, “Hey, hi. Wow, thank you. Gosh, I just – what a night.”
The Legally Blonde star continued, stumbling over her words, “To my fellow nominees, just to be in your company, it’s incredible. And, you know, I just want to say, you know, I took a lavender bath tonight before the show and it made me swell up in my dress and I’m having a hard time speaking.
“But, anyway, I just – this is so thrilling. Oh, s**t.”
Jennifer pulled a paper from her dress, visibly flustered as she rushed to thank the producers at HBO and others.
Suddenly, music began to play before she was finished with her list of thank yous.
The music shifted from slow, subtle music signaling her to wrap things up to a fast-paced pop song.
Rather than get frustrated, or stop, she got as far as she could on her list and simply leaned in, dancing to the beat.
TRIP OF A LIFETIME
Acclaimed actress Geena Davis received a special honor at last year’s show, when she accepted the Governors Award on behalf of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
But her acceptance speech was overshadowed by when she tripped over her long yellow gown in an embarrassing live TV mishap.
The 66-year-old accepted the Governors Award on behalf of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media at Monday’s 74th Emmy Awards, but not before a head-turning moment.
As the actress was making her way up to the stage she seemed to get tangled by her dress before various people came to her aid, including comic Martin Short.
“Thank you so much!” Geena told the screaming audience as she admitted “I tripped over my own dress!”
Fans on social media were also locked into the moment as one person tweeted, “Geena Davis asks for help up the stairs and a swarm of dudes rush to the stage. Damn right.”
Another commented, “I love the divine Geena Davis realizing her walk up the stairs was gonna end badly, summoning help, and having a whole fleet of men race to her side.”
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Sometimes, the blunders are not made by the stars and celebrities, but by the show itself.
Right from the start in 2022, viewers took to Twitter to point out some issues they noticed, especially during host Kenan Thompson‘s musical introduction where the sound seemed to be out of sync.
The camera also seemed to shake during Michael Keaton‘s acceptance speech for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – the 71-year-old also appeared to get muted for a moment as he spoke.
“What is going on with the cameras and sound?” one person tweeted during the broadcast.
“Am I the only one whose sound is out of sync on the Emmys?” another added.
One viewer agreed: “… The camera is so shaky- it’s making me sick.”
“I would like to offer my services as a sound engineer. I couldn’t do any worse than the person doing it,” another joked.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Seth MacFarlane showed the importance of being prepared when he introduced the best reality show host award at the 2012 Emmys.
Seth started naming the nominees, but no one could hear him.
No, his microphone wasn’t off – rather, he was in the wrong place.
While his scripted spiel was falling flat, someone behind the scenes got his attention, and let him know the hot mic was actually across the stage.
So Seth shuffled over to the correct mic, and could do little but admit to his gaffe.
“Oh, the mic’s over there,” he said, as he walked to the correct spot.
The Family Guy creator tried to play the gaffe off by channeling his inner Stewie Griffin voice.
“This is what happens when you don’t come to rehearsals,” Seth said in the babies British accent.
GIVE THEM A HAND
Antonio Banderas crazy clapping technique at the 2017 Emmys went viral in 2018, with fans comparing it to Nicole Kidman’s odd hand movements at the Oscars just one year prior.
Antonio was caught on camera clapping with his middle fingers bent downward in a claw, making a bizarre finger formation.
And viewers were quick to point it out.
One person tweeted that it was the, “Weirdest clapping technique I have ever seen.”
Another suggested, “We need to talk about how Antonio Banderas was just clapping with claw fingers.”
Another wrote, “If we meme’d Nicole Kidman clapping, we MUST meme the hell out of whatever Antonio Banderas was just doing with his hands.”
“Antonio Banderas clapping is the new Nicole Kidman clapping meme,” a third tweeted. “Let’s gooooo.”
The Spanish hunk’s blunder comes after the actress’s bizarre clapping at last year’s Academy Awards went viral.
