Father John Misty has shared a song off his already-digitally-released compilation album, Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said to Crawl. The LP pulls choice material from five already-released albums, spanning from 2012’s Fear Fun to 2022’s Chloë and The Next 20th Century, to evoke a career-spanning mix into a singular collection. As a bonus, the never-before-heard single “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” has dropped.
Apart from today’s debut, which marks the arrival of first-time material, Greatish Hits represents an amalgamated mash-up of songs that initially appeared on the aforementioned Fear Fun and follow-ups, including I Love You, Honeybear (2015), the Grammy-nominated Pure Comedy (2017), God’s Favorite Customer (2018) and the latest semblance of Misty’s studio efforts, Chloë.
Greatish Hits includes the first appearance of fan favorite “Real Love Baby” on an album release, a song which has wracked up a staggering 322 million listens on Spotify. While new to the canon, Misty’s “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” is destined for a similar status as his 2017 call for love, due in large part to a big band feel pledged to sprawling horns, a consistent backbeat and emergence of keys.
For the jam community, the song is made for improvisational builds, a catalyst for movement and malleability, much like the Goose adopted “I’m Writing a Novel,” which was performed live at Radio City Music Hall in 2022, later recorded and released as an official single with its originator as a featured extra.
Misty’s most recent actions arrive ahead of September dates in support of Kacey Musgraves’s Deeper Well album, beginning on September 4 in State College, Pa., before his own headlining concerts this fall. For more information, visit www.fatherjohnmisty.com.
