Wilco have shared a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” in honor of the late artist’s 77th birthday. Check it out below.
The band said in a statement: “As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements. Striving to reach the heights of his freedom and talent is a wise goal for any band. We thank Mountain Stage for letting us give this song another home on Earth.”
Jeff Tweedy and crew performed the Bowie classic live at a 2016 concert at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater. This version, recorded last April, appears on the new compilation Live on Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers. Out April 19, the album gathers performances from NPR Music and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Mountain Stage live performance show, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The album also includes songs from John Prine, Jason Isbell, the Indigo Girls, Tyler Childers, and more.
