Stop & Shop is the latest retail chain to close down several locations, with 32 underperforming grocery stores being shut down in 2024. “Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop president Gordon Reid (who is retiring next year) said in a recent statement. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.” Here’s what customers need to know about what will happen next.

Ahold Delhaize USA has appointed Lee Nicholson as executive vice president and chief merchant to try and rejuvenate the future of Stop & Shop. “Lee will carry forward the next phases of the large, multi-year price investments Stop & Shop is making, which is a key part of our commitment to strengthen our customer value proposition,” says new president Roger Wheeler, via GroceryDive. “Lee is an excellent leader who has the ability to build strong teams focused on the customer, and I look forward to aligning our merchandising strategies to support our work to reposition Stop & Shop.”

Stop & Shop still operates 360 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. “I have not only spent a significant portion of my career working at the brand but am a lifelong customer and have a strong passion for the communities Stop & Shop serves.”
Complete Remodel

Stop & Shop is in the process of a complete remodel, both in store and online, Reid says. “This means we’ll be focused on delivering lower everyday prices, as well as even more savings for our customers through strong promotions. Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, with the customer shopping experience in mind. These stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled.”

Flagship Location

It’s not all doom and gloom for Stop & Shop—the company’s flagship store opened this year and is doing well, Reid says. “We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation, similar to our new Boston flagship location, opened last month in the Allston Yards development. We look forward to continuing to serve and care for our communities and to grow Stop & Shop as a local brand for many years to come.”
