Sigur Rós have released their new album via BMG. It’s called Átta, and physical formats of the album will arrive on September 1. Earlier this week, the band released the album track “Blóðberg.” Listen to that and the rest of the album below.
Átta, which Sigur Rós announced just a day before its release, is the first new album since Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson rejoined Jónsi and Georg “Goggi” Holm in the band. Jónsi said in a statement that the three musicians found themselves “just wanting to have minimal drums and for the music to be really sparse, floaty and beautiful.” He continued, “We’re getting older and more cynical, so I just wanted to move us so that we felt something!”
Sveinsson added: “We wanted to allow ourselves to be a bit dramatic and go far with these arrangements. The world needs that right now. It’s hard to describe, but for me everything is always open to interpretation. People can think and feel how they want.”
Sigur Rós’ new album features the London Contemporary Orchestra conducted by Robert Ames, plus Icelandic collaborators Brassgat í bala. Paul Corley mixed and co-produced the album alongside the band.
