Retail Drugs, the NYC-based project helmed by musician Jake Brooks, has released the final advance single ‘little dog’ ahead their new album rECKless dRIVing via Fire Talk Records’ Angel Tapes imprint.

Recorded straight to tape in Brooks’ apartment, ‘little dog’ showcases one of the sweetest melodies in Retail Drugs’ growing catalog. A lo-fi indie ballad with layered percussion and acoustic guitar, the song begins with Brooks softly singing, “The hardest part is already behind, I’m done,” before taking a darker turn with the biting refrain, “you’re fucking up my scene.” It’s a moment that encapsulates the duality of the project—charming on the surface, but emotionally raw beneath.

Brooks shared the song’s backstory, explaining that it was written in 2021 during a hungover morning on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York. While recovering at a family stop in Denver, a dog named Fergus became the unexpected muse. “I sang this little song to him as a joke. The song lived in my head for two years before I actually recorded it,” Brooks said, noting that it was influenced by the work of his longtime friend and collaborator Dylan Sky.

‘little dog’ is out now on your favorite DSP.
