Björk’s first album in five years, Fossora, will arrive September 30. Its cover art, depicting Björk crouched atop a vibrant fungal underworld, can be found below. Vidar Logi shot the cover, with Björk and James Merry serving as creative directors. In a statement with the reveal, Björk wrote:
The album was also inspired by the global population’s pandemic experience: “7 billion of us did it together/nesting in our homes quarantining/being long enough in one place that we shot down roots,” she wrote. Of the title, she said, “it is a word i made up. it is the feminine of fossore ( digger, delver, ditcher ). so in short it means “she who digs” ( into the ground ).”
Sonically, Fossora “is about bass , heavy bottom-end , we have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub,” she wrote. She spoke in a previous interview about the influence of gabber on the LP.
Fossora’s lead single, “Atopos,” is “coming soon,” according to an Instagram teaser. As well as the album, the Icelandic artist is preparing to launch a podcast called Björk: Sonic Symbolism. The first three episodes, documenting Debut, Post, and Homogenic, will arrive tomorrow, September 1.
