Nicolas Cage has made his big return to the vampire genre.
It was announced in November that the Oscar-winning actor would star as Dracula in horror-comedy flick Renfield. News of the role immediately intrigued movie buffs, who were eager to see how Cage would tackle the iconic character. Well, we know have our first look at what Universal Pictures has in store.
On Wednesday, People magazine published exclusive on-set photos of Cage donning the Dracula costume. The 58-year-old is seen in the streets of New Orleans rocking slicked-back hair, a red velvet suit, gaudy jewelry, long finger nails, and, of course, a sun-deprived pale face.
Renfield will co-star Nicholas Hoult (Those Who Wish Me Dead) as the titular character, who appears in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel as Dracula’s henchman. The film will be directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) with a script from Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty).
In his newly released GQ cover story, Cage revealed his Dracula would be inspired by his father and rock legend David Bowie.
“I’m trying to become the Thin White Duke for Dracula […]” said Cage, who also donned fangs for 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. “August Coppola’s coming back. And he’s coming back as Dracula.”
Renfield also co-stars Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on April 14, 2023.
