A dog that went missing during Hurricane Harvey back in 2017 has been found over 300 miles from home.
The dog, named Blue, disappeared from her family’s home in Corpus Christi, Texas, after the storm damaged their fence. She was two years old at the time, according to People.
However, in July 2025, Blue was found inside a public bathroom in Cameron Park, located in Waco, Texas.
A passerby contacted animal control, and the animal was taken to the Pet Circle Regional Animal Shelter, which shared the news on Instagram.
“After nearly eight years, the family was thrilled to learn that Blue was safe,” they wrote in the post.
Identified through microchip
Shelter staff scanned Blue for a microchip, which led them to her original owners. The family had kept their contact information up to date.
The shelter arranged for the family and the individual who found Blue to meet at a central location for the handoff.
“This heartwarming reunion is a powerful reminder that microchips work,” the shelter added in the post. “Because Blue was chipped (and her owner’s contact information was up to date), she was able to find her way home after nearly a decade apart.”
Officials pointed to Waco’s “Fire House to Your House” scanning program as part of the effort to identify stray animals in the area. The initiative equips first responders with microchip scanners to assist with pet recovery.
On July 22, a family went viral after they went to adopt a dog following the death of their previous pet, Rufus – only to realize they had inadvertently adopted his father in the process.
