A former McDonald’s chef has revealed some of the big reasons why they offer “healthy” options but take them off the menu so regularly.
Over the years, McDonald’s has tried to offer some healthier menu options. They had chicken salads for a long time, Happy Meals are offered with fruit bags and water, and a few others as well.
However, some of the ‘healthier’ options typically don’t stick around for too long. Naturally, that’s because they’re not as popular as other menu items. Everyone has their go-to order, after all.
Yet, according to former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz, these ‘healthier’ options have a purpose – to draw you in.
McDonald’s draws customers in with healthy options
The former McDonald’s chef regularly takes to TikTok to lift the lid on some secrets about the Golden Arches and explained the thinking behind ‘healthy’ menu items.
“Strategically, things like that are put on a McDonald’s menu. Many people think, ‘wow, McDonald’s isn’t healthy, why would you do that?’” he said.
“Well, somebody who is kind of trying to be healthy – maybe parents who want to get their kids a Happy Meal but have no menu items to choose from – they would order the grilled chicken or the grilled chicken salad.”
He noted that those customers will still go to McDonald’s and ultimately order something else. But, healthy options like the grilled chicken salad didn’t meet the “threshold” of sales to justify keeping.
“There was no issue with drop off of customers. If they got rid of burgers, yeah, people are not going to go there anymore,” Haracz added. “They got rid of it (grilled chicken) because you’re going to order something else for you and your family,” he concluded.
