On Super Bowl Sunday, Marvel Studios unveiled the first official teaser trailer for the upcoming third entry in the Deadpool franchise, which was revealed as being officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine.
The first of the Deadpool films to be produced by Marvel Studios, and therefore the first R-rated movie in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans of Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth have been eagerly awaiting footage from the highly-anticipated film, which will be released this summer.
To the surprise of many, the initial trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine wisely kept most of its plot under wraps and even had the self-discipline to not fully unveil Hugh Jackman’s much-hyped return as Wolverine.
That said, when viewed with an attentive eye, some plot details can be discerned, such as who the apparent villain of the film will be: Cassandra Nova.
According to Marvel Fandom, Cassandra Nova, the ‘sister’ of Charles Xavier (Professor X), is “what the Shi’ar call ‘Mummudrai’, the spirit that is the equal and opposite of a person,” i.e. Professor X, thus making her quite literally an evil version of the famed X-Men leader.
In addition to possessing telepathy that rivals Charles Xavier, Cassandra Nova also has the abilities of telekinesis and DNA duplication, which allows her to “copy the DNA of sentient beings.”
Given the nature of the role and the actors involved in Deadpool & Wolverine, many suspect that former The Crown star Emma Corrin will be portraying Cassandra Nova.
Corrin, 28 years old, has been a breakout star in recent years thanks to their role as Princess Diana in The Crown and subsequent parts in My Policeman and A Murder at the End of the World. Corrin has also been cast in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu alongside Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe.
In addition to Reynolds, Jackman, and Corrin, Deadpool & Wolverine will also star Owen Wilson, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Jennifer Garner, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney, and more.
