As a part of Elon Musk trying to create an AI version of Vine powered by Grok, he found a massive archive of Vines that were thought to be completely lost to time.
It’s possible to watch many of the most viral Vines if you’re willing to dig through compilations on YouTube, but finding your favorites in a sea of hour-long videos is a huge hassle. Not to mention that there are probably thousands upon thousands of videos that didn’t get grabbed before the app got wiped.
So, in an effort to revive Vine with Grok Imagine, he’s restoring the archives and giving people back these old Vines.
While Vine won’t ever return in its old form, at least that media is getting preserved in one way or another.
Elon’s bringing back lost Vines along with Grok Imagine
Vine didn’t have a long life as an app, but it’s fondly remembered by the people who used it. In many ways, it was the precursor to TikTok and created a bigger stage for short form content.
Users only had 6 seconds to make a video, forcing people to get creative if they wanted to tell a story or a good joke within that time frame. But people who did manage to pull it off had a level of viral fame that, in a lot of ways, lasts today.
Logan Paul, Drew Gooden, King Bach, and several other creators who are still big today got their start on the platform. Though they’ve grown far past that 6 second restriction, many of their OG fans still fondly remember the days where short form content was the only thing they posted.
Elon plans to bring them all back.
It’ll be a while until Grok Imagine is publicly accessible, with it being expected to roll out in October 2025. In the meantime, though, he’s working on a way to give users access to Vine again.
Twitter bought Vine almost a decade ago at this point, and, since Elon bought Twitter in the time since, it makes sense that he’d have access to the archive.
There’s sure to be a lot of childhood nostalgia for users who end up revisiting their favorites, or perhaps seeing Vines they posted several years ago that they thought would be lost to time permanently.
Elon hinted that he’d try to bring Vine back in its entirety in January 2025, but it appears he’s replacing it with Grok Imagine instead. At least users who loved the platform can see their favorite videos again and create shorts in the spirit of Vine even if the platform itself is getting rebranded.
