Ellen Pompeo’s Secret To Avoiding Airplane Recognition

The "Grey's Anatomy" star told Travel & Leisure that when she travels, she works hard to avoid revealing her most recognizable feature.

Ellen Pompeo is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, so it makes sense that the actor goes to great lengths to hide her identity in public.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” star told Travel & Leisure that when she travels, she works hard to avoid revealing her most recognizable feature.

“I just usually have a hat on, and I don’t speak,” the actor said in an article published on Thursday.

“People recognize my voice, so I try not to talk,” she added. “I try to use sign language with my kids. The minute I open my mouth, everybody turns.”

Her celebrity didn’t win her any favors with TSA on one trip, when she got a visit from the bomb squad because of a snack she was trying to fly with.

“I had a bag of sunflower seeds, like organic sunflower seeds from Erewhon, so they were probably the most expensive sunflower seeds money can buy,” she said.

“They literally held me for an hour, and they brought the bomb squad in. And I was like, what is happening? Is this a joke?” the actor explained.

“They said it was most likely a chemical on the packaging of these super expensive, fancy, organic, clean sunflower seeds. My protein on the plane!” Pompeo said, adding that she almost missed her flight.

“It was really like no one would ever believe this!” she added. ” I was texting my publicist saying, ‘I might not get on this plane, and you’re never gonna guess why.’”

In case Pompeo ever wants to up her disguises in public ― recognizable voice aside ― the actor could take notes from Blackpink member, Rosé.

The singer recently revealed that she dressed up as an elderly woman ― complete with prosthetics and a wig ― in order to be anonymous.

“It was really, really intense,” she told DAZED magazine in an article published on Thursday. “I don’t think I’ll ever do that again.”
