A former fine dining server in New York City is shocking people far and wide with a bar tab from two people she waited on in 2017. They can’t believe how much the two spent on a single meal.
“Eat the rich,” the on-screen text included in Deborah Rayne’s (@d_rayneday) viral TikTok says.
In the post, Rayne displays a receipt from the tab two patrons racked up at her bar eight years ago. Their total, including tax and tip, is over $7,000.
“You have no idea what being wealthy in America is actually like,” Rayne begins. “You think you’re doing OK when you make it to six figures.”
The actor, writer, and self-described feminist “specializing in smashing the patriarchy” grants that the total was a bit exception, but not out of the ordinary at a fine dining restaurant like the one she worked in. She says truly wealthy people drop huge sums like this on a single meal on a “random Tuesday.”
“The amount of money people spend when they go out is abso-f——-lutely obscene,” she says.
She recounts that the two had a shot apiece of Jamesons, a bottle of Screaming Eagle cabernet sauvignon, two New York strip steaks, mashed potatoes with truffle oil, and bought a bottle of Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Champagne for the “two cute girls” beside them at the bar. The receipt shows that the bottle of Screaming Eagle alone cost $4,500.
Rayne believes this underscores wealth disparity in America.
Worse yet, she says the man wasn’t even a billionaire.
“He was wealthy for sure but not a bazillionaire like the Bezoses of the world,” she says.
Rayne didn’t immediately answer questions sent via email.
Rage Against The Rich
Rayne’s post about the bar tab is fueling anger at the wealthy. As of this writing, it has 327,000 views and counting—much like the wealthy tally their riches.
According to Inquality.org, the richest 12 people in America’s cumulative net worth is more than $2 trillion. Further, the richest 1% owns about 50% of stock and mutual funds.
And their share of the nation’s wealth just keeps going up. Meanwhile, half of Americans have just $500 in savings, per Yahoo Finance.
This fuels outrage towards the wealthy.
Rayne and others point out that the amount these men spent at the bar would be a game-changer for many, if not most, Americans.
“Money that would change your [expletive] life, they’re blowing on their bar tab just for funsies,” Rayne says.
“When you’re putting groceries on your credit card, when you’re living paycheck to paycheck, worried about getting sick, not getting health insurance, all the things that we normal people are worrying about, there are wealthy people in this country who are [expletive] laughing at us.”
Although many, particularly the wealthy, like to claim their vast assets are due to their hard work, people like Rayne reject this.
“Keep in mind, most of these people didn’t work harder than the average person to get to where they are, they were just in the right place and know the right people,” one responded to her TikTok. This echoes the common phrase that the rich were “born on third base.”
Others just wish they’d pay their fair share towards the common good.
“But they can’t pay a little tax,” reads a comment with 3,590 likes.
The tax rate the richest among us pay has plummeted over the years. This, coupled with their ever-increasing largesse that allows a couple of men to casually drop $7,000 at a bar, has many feeling like the wealthy are mocking the rest of us.
“I was at the grocery store the other day. Seven dollars and 29 cents for a box of [expletive] cereal,” Rayne says. “That’s the federal minimum wage for one hour of work. So you have to work one hour to almost make enough to buy one box of [expletive] cereal.”
She concludes, “But you’ve got guys like this going out and laughing at you. Revolution.”
