Unlike her hit song, Macy Gray didn’t stumble while walking off the UK version of The Masked Singer. On the most recent episode of the singing competition, the artist — dressed as Toad in the Hole — stormed off the stage after her elimination. Watch a clip below.
It reportedly took an hour to coax Gray back out for her exit interview, during which she gave short answers. According to the Daily Mail, Gray was “blindsided” by being eliminated in the season’s third episode after previously reaching the finals of the US version of The Masked Singer in 2023.
Host Joel Dommett described the incident as the “funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life” while speaking to BBC Radio 2’s Paddy McGuinness. Dommett also joked that eliminated contestants can’t be too upset because they “get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”
“This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or if you’re not, the show doesn’t sit in either camp,” Dommett said. “The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognizable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are.”
He continued, “In my professional career — I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice — but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6-foot toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
This was actually Gray’s third appearance on The Masked Singer and her second time causing chaos on the show. In 2021, she refused to leave the Australian version after being voted off.
