Dream Theater have announced their 16th studio album, Parasomnia, arriving February 7th. The video for the lead single “Night Terror” has also been unveiled.
The track is the first studio recording to feature drummer Mike Portnoy since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings and clocks in at nearly 10 minutes in length.

Portnoy immediately makes his presence heard, guiding the intro with a barrage of drum fills before guitarist John Petrucci locks into the song’s central riff, signaling the opening verse. The band deftly stay in the backdrop against singer James LaBrie’s soaring vocals, but the instrumental fireworks start about halfway through the track. This is what DT fans have been waiting 15 years for: a hyper-technical prog workout guided by the propulsive drumming of Mike Portnoy — the sound of a band in peak form.
Running 71 minutes in length across eight tracks, Parasomnia was produced by Petrucci and engineered by James “Jimmy T” Meslin, with mixing by Andy Sneap. The band’s longtime collaborator Hugh Syme once again contributed sleeve artwork.
Parasomnia will be available in multiple physical configurations, including a deluxe 2-CD/Blu-Ray box set (featuring instrumentals, a Dolby Atmos 5.1 mix by Mark Gittins, hi-res stereo mixes, animated visualizers, and a 68-page booklet). Various gatefold double-LP vinyl variants, plus a standalone CD digipak release, will also be available. Pre-orders start Friday (October 11th) via this location.
Meanwhile, Dream Theater will be hitting the road for a previously announced North American tour the day the album drops, kicking off the trek February 7th in Philadelphia. Get tickets here.
