Discord raises server member cap 5x allowing for 2.5M users at a time

Discord has increased its default server member cap from 500,000 to 2.5 million, allowing larger online communities to continue growing without hitting previous size limits.

The decision comes as several communities on the platform, including Midjourney and Genshin Impact, have surpassed millions of members.

Discord stated that servers exceeding the new limit can request further increases, which are subject to review based on moderation practices, community engagement, and adherence to Trust & Safety guidelines. Additionally, servers with large member counts will continue to have push notifications limited to mentions only, to reduce platform strain.

Discord now allows 2.5M people in a single server

“We’ve made a whole bunch of changes recently to better support large servers,” they wrote in the July 7 patch notes. “The default member cap has been raised from 500K to 2.5M (yes, MILLION), and we’ve boosted the loading speed of member lists for large servers to make managing and navigating them smoother.

“We also improved our monitoring and automatic scaling mechanisms for servers to better detect and remediate individual server performance issues without you having to reach out to our support team.”

In the past year, Discord has introduced several features aimed at enhancing user experience and community management. In early 2025, the platform rolled out Soundboard, allowing users to play short audio clips during voice chats. Discord also expanded its Activities feature, giving servers built-in games and collaborative apps without leaving the platform.

Other updates included improved moderation tools, such as AutoMod enhancements, and the introduction of Quests, which are time-limited sponsored experiences inside servers. Mobile app performance has also been a focus, with several patches aimed at reducing crashes and improving voice and video stability.

The latest server cap increase and additional features are part of Discord’s broader effort to scale with its growing user base.
