Discord mobile is getting ads – but it’s not as bad as you think

Discord is launching video quests on its mobile app, bringing the sponsored ads over from its desktop version.

Back in April 2024, Discord launched a new sponsored quest feature on its desktop app which allows users to complete special tasks to receive an award.

The quests appear at the bottom of your screen in the form of an ad, which almost immediately caused a revolt from users of the popular messaging platform.

On Thursday, March 20, Discord revealed that it is bringing the sponsored quests to its mobile app in June 2025.

Discord is launching ads on mobile

According to The Verge, Discord is bringing Video Quests to the mobile app in June 2025 that will allow users to earn rewards like avatar decorations and in-game items just by watching a video.

The Quest will appear at the bottom of the screen and can be dismissed or tapped on to open the dedicated Quest tab that will allow you to watch the video of whichever game is being promoted. In the announcement, the app uses Brawl Stars as an example of a game that unlocks a free Discord avatar decoration.

“Expanding our advertising platform to mobile is an obvious, natural evolution in our strategy,” said Discord’s product leader, Peter Sellis.

“Our mission is to create the most authentic, player-centric advertising platform in the galaxy. This expansion will provide brand partners access to Discord’s highly engaged, cross-platform mobile audience — and create new opportunities for businesses to connect with our community in meaningful, and performant, ways.”

If the rollout of mobile video quests is anything like the desktop version, it’s quite likely users will be able to turn the ads off entirely through an option in the settings menu.

This comes just weeks after Discord added a new ignore feature that allows users to hide messages from users they no longer want to hear from without having to block them entirely.
