Discord is bringing some of its most popular mobile features over to its desktop app for the first time with a significant redesign.
The popular messaging program completely redesigned its mobile app in 2023, fully releasing it to users in December of the same year.
Users almost immediately revolted, with many canceling their Discord Nitro subscriptions in protest of the massive redesign. The company has continued to work on improving the mobile app in the years since.
Rumors of a desktop redesign have swirled on social media throughout 2024 and early 2025, and on Tuesday, March 25, it was finally revealed.
Discord redesign brings new themes
Discord launched the new midnight theme alongside its mobile app redesign back in 2023, and it’s finally coming to desktop with the latest update in the form of what they’re calling ‘Onyx.’
That’s not the only theme coming to desktop either, as Discord is also launching a new Light theme alongside Ash and Dark – two dark theme variants that are closer to the app’s existing design.
Accompanying the new themes is another feature previously only available on mobile, as Discord has brought UI density options over to its desktop app. Users will be able to choose from spacious, default, and compact to adjust the space between messages – letting you see more or less at a time, whichever you prefer.
Outside of the new themes, Discord desktop has added the ability to resize the channel list so you can have it take up as much room as you’d like. This will make it easier to see longer channel names, but it will also be handy for those looking to maximize how much of the chat window they can see.
Discord will now let users resize the app’s channel list.
There are refreshed color accents and illustrations throughout the app that are meant to improve legibility and make the desktop app design consistent with its mobile variant.
This comes just days after Discord announced that it is bringing ads to its mobile app through sponsored video quests. Starting June 2025, users will be able to watch videos to unlock in-game items and decorations for their avatars.
