Gareth Edwards is one of the finest sci-fi filmmakers working today and as such, his name is going to be attached to projects all across the genre.
Following the release of and response to his original sci-fi film The Creator, Edwards — who hadn’t directed a feature film since 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — is once again on the forefront of Hollywood’s mind.
As such, a recent rumor has suggested that Marvel Studios is eyeing Edwards to helm a fifth film in the Thor franchise following the disappointing reception to Taika Waititi’s overly absurd Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.
Speaking to Edwards (who was promoting the release of The Creator on 4K and Blu-ray on December 12), BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast asked if he had seen those rumors and what he thinks about them.
Edwards confirmed that he not only had seen the rumors but he even jokingly sent them to his girlfriend.
“I saw those rumors too. I saw it and I jokingly sent it to my girlfriend. I just texted her the link and said, ‘I didn’t want you to find out this way,’” Edwards said while speaking with BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast. “I’ve never heard anything about it. It’s totally… the internet is an incredible place.”
“I love those movies. I love Marvel, a lot of my friends work on Marvel films. I’m very excited about the future of cinema, personally. I feel like everything we did differently on The Creator is probably the strongest part of the film. And I just want to push that even further, so having the freedom and being able to take risks, being allowed to fail. I think that’s all an important part of any creativity,” Edwards explained.
“And so I’m very excited about having another go at my own film. I love all the other movies and franchises, I go to see them. I have most of them on my DVD/Blu-ray shelf. But I really want to keep pursuing original sci-fi. Was that a very politically correct answer? I never say never. In the right circumstances, absolutely.”
Given the struggles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years, they’d certainly be wise to recruit a filmmaker of Edwards’ caliber.
