Amazon has launched a grand slam with its first James Bond film since acquiring the rights to the franchise, as Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has been tapped to direct the 26th James Bond movie.
Denis Villeneuve, who most recently directed the Best Picture-nominated Dune: Part Two, is one of the most acclaimed large scale filmmakers working today, with his credits including Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the Dune movies.
Villeneuve is next set to begin production on Dune: Messiah, which is currently schedule to release in 2026. He also has projects such as Cleopatra; an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi novel Rendezvous with Rama; and Nuclear War: A Scenario, an adaptation of the work of non-fiction by Annie Jacobsen, in the works.
As such, it is unclear when Villeneuve would be able to begin production on Bond 26.
“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust,” Villeneuve said in a statement.
While movie fans have been worried about a corporate conglomerate like Amazon getting its hands on James Bond, there’s simply no denying that short of Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve is perhaps THE perfect choice for the gig.
With Villeneuve now slotted in the director’s chair, attentions will now turn to who will be cast as the iconic MI6 spy, with actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johson, Theo James, Aaron Pierre, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson being considered among the frontrunners.
