The Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s death certificate has now confirmed her cause of death

Sinead’s former husband John Reynolds registered her death on Wednesday in Lambeth, London.

The beloved singer-songwriter’s death certificate said the singer died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

She had also been suffering from a respiratory tract infection at the time of her death.

The death certificate states her death was caused by “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection.”

COPD is an inflammatory lung disease that restricts airflow and can cause breathing problems.

The mum-of-four had been living in London at the time of her passing and was found unresponsive in her south-east London flat, after moving there just weeks before.

It followed the tragic loss of her 17-year-old son Shane, who died by suicide in January 2022.

Sinead’s autopsy report released in January confirmed she died of “natural causes” and Southwark Coroners Court “ceased involvement” in her death.

A spokesman for Southwark Coroners Court said at the time: “This is to confirm that Ms O’Connor died of natural causes.

“The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death. No further comment will be made.”

Sinéad’s ex Dermott Hayes told The Irish Sun in January that he believed the results of the autopsy showed the singer died of a broken heart following the loss of her son.

He said: “From this you can surmise that a broken heart is a real illness symptom, and a cause of death.

“It doesn’t make Sinéad’s passing any less painful. It was more to do with a broken heart than anything else.”

The music legend had been open about struggling to cope with her son’s death.

In a heartbreaking video posted just days before her death she said: “losing a kid isn’t good for the soul.”

WAX FIGURE

Earlier this week, a wax figure of Sinéad was unveiled in the National Wax Museum ahead of the anniversary of her death.

The figure recreated the singer’s iconic Nothing Compares 2 U music video.

Museum owner Paddy Dunning, who had known the singer since she was 17, told The Irish Sun: “That’s the video that turned Sinéad into a global superstar.”

However, the figure has now been removed from public display after backlash from fans and the singer’s family.

Sinéad’s brother Paddy told Liveline he thought the replica of his sister was “hideous”.

He said: “I just didn’t think it looked like her at all. When I saw it yesterday I was shocked, I thought it looked like something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds.”

Owner Paddy Dunning admitted to The Irish Sun that he did not have time to review the replica that was created by PJ Heraghty and sent out his apologises.

He said: “Sinead was a personal friend of mine.

“I knew it wasn’t right but I still had to go ahead with the launch because so many press and media were coming.

“My heart sunk a bit, we went ahead with the launch, I didn’t sleep last night. I deeply regret it and I’m sending out my apologies.

“I had to take the decision to cancel the statue and we’ll go again. We’ll remodel but we’ll have to do better.”
